Penn State Webmail to Gmail

For any Penn Staters out there who HATE webmail as much as I do:

(note: this will not move all your old emails over to gmail, just the new ones)

  1. Create a Gmail account
(this gmail account does not need to be the same as your psu id. In fact its probably better to make it something that you can keep for a long time like
  2. Go to:
  3. On the right hand side, click Change your e-mail forwarding address
  4. Log in
  5. Type your new gmail email address and click “Change”
  6. Log into your gmail account
  7. Top right corner, click settings
  8. Select accounts
  9. Click “Add another email address”
  10. Type your school email address (example:
  11. Click next step
  12. Click Send Verification
(note: the verification will go to your psu email address, which will automatically forward to your gmail account)
  13. Open the Verification email and click the verification link
  14. Go back to your accounts settings and if it still says “unverified” hit refresh and then go into account settings again
  15. Next to your school email address click “Make Default”
  16. Optional: Set the “When I receive a message sent to one of my addresses:” setting to your choice

You’re done 🙂 Now all your email that you send through gmail will come from your @ email address (or as an option you can select your gmail address from a drop down menu) and all emails sent to your psu address will be forwarded to gmail. What a perfect world 🙂

My webmail is about to expire and I’m trying to import my old email to a gmail account. It gives me an error message every time when I use POP3. Is there anything else that can be done?

    • three20four says:

Did you set the correct POP3 settings in Gmail?

      Account Type: POP3
      User Name (e.g., xyz123)
      Password: Your access account password
Check “Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail” checkbox.
      Incoming Mail Server:
Set the incoming server port to 995.
      Outgoing Mail Server:
Set the outgoing server port to 587.

      • siddarth says:

I’m using the import feature from the desktop site, it asks for my email, password and server settings ( and port 995). It logs in and gives me options to select what to import, but does not go through in the end.

After step 14, I cannot make my psu email the default…
i don’t know if it’s still going to work for me!
